From the Chief’s Corner: Thoughts in the Wake of Recent Tragedies…

Fireman

Chief Alan Perdue (Ret.), CFO, FM,
Executive Director – Safer Buildings Coalition

Posted on January 28, 2022

Over the past several weeks there have been numerous headlines related to different tragedies across the United States. From significant fires and building collapses resulting in loss of life of both public and firefighters in Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, and Florida, to law enforcement officers being gunned down while on and off the job. While we do not have all the final investigation reports on some of these current events yet, what we do know from experience is that the perception of something in one’s mind - let’s call that attitude - can impact the way one views and forms opinions about a particular issue. That attitude can then lead one to take action, or a lack thereof, that can impact both theirs and someone else’s life. Sounds confusing right? Not really, I’ll try to explain from a former fire chief’s point of view.

From the Chief’s Corner: The Present…

When one hears the word “present” especially during the Christmas season it is often referring to something thoughtfully given from another as in a gift.  But this month, I want to take a moment to talk about a phrase that originated in ancient English in the 1400’s and that is “there’s no time like the present”. In this context, but the present is an opportunity to provide input to help shape a very important aspect of the in-building public safety communications industry. So, what is this opportunity you ask?

A Shifting Focus of Public Safety Communication Heading Into 2022

A Shifting Focus of Public Safety Communication

By Dennis Burns, President of the SBC Board

Posted on December 21, 2021

Public Safety communication goes through many changes each year, but 2022 marks a major shift in what it means when we talk about public safety, in-building communications, and even the core focus of the Safer Buildings Coalition. Older versions of code included the term Emergency Responder Radio Communications Systems (ERRCS). Current code now refers to Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES). A small distinction with major impact.  The change recognizes that Emergency Responders use many forms of communication today, including cellular, LMR, DMR, and SMR. And the future looks to add private networks, Bluetooth, 5G and other technologies. Since the public uses many of these technologies, there is more and more synergy between the communication needs of the public (like being able to call 9-1-1) and those of public safety.

2022 Florida Legislative Session: HB 785 and SB 1190 have been filed that seek to exempt apartment buildings that are 75 feet or less in height from complying with the minimum radio strength requirements by the Florida Fire Prevention Code (FFPC). If signed into law these bills would jeopardize the safety of emergency responders and occupants in apartments buildings. The Government Affairs WG is currently reaching out to numerous public safety and industry stakeholders to develop a strategy to oppose these onerous bills.
