At a recent event, I was asked to deliver an impromptu speech to the group. I accepted the invitation, but what would I talk about? Then an image came to me of the last thing I remembered after backing into the parking space: the words inscribed on the passenger side mirror: “OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR.”

But what does a car’s side view mirror have to do with public safety in-building systems? Let me explain… It is about optics. How you can lose sight of what’s important if you focus too much on matters that distract you.

Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) play crucial roles in enforcing fire codes and are key members of the Safer Buildings community. Safer Buildings Coalition’s Outreach Liaison, Steve Hudson, is responsible for identifying AHJs in communities in which the Coalition hosts an event – such a seminar – and inviting those state and local code officials to participate.

The Connect X conference and expo descended on Orlando, Fl, last month, and the Safer Buildings Coalition participated in the event as both exhibitor and content partner. On Tuesday, we put together a very strong program, with participation by thought leaders from across the industry. The presentations and panel discussion inspired engaging discussions and tackled some of the key issues facing the industry.

Draft code proposals for the 2022 edition of NFPA 1221 are due June 26th

If you’re planning a family vacation, or thinking about getting tickets for Super Bowl LVI, the year 2022 probably seems far away. But if you’re a stakeholder in the in-building emergency responder communications system world, 2022 is actually a lot closer than you may think.

Indeed, the first draft code proposals for the 2022 edition of NFPA 1221 – the Standard for the Installation, Maintenance, and Use of Emergency Services Communications Systems – are due on June 26, 2019 at 5:00 pm EDT.
