A Shifting Focus of Public Safety Communication Heading Into 2022

A Shifting Focus of Public Safety Communication

Public Safety communication goes through many changes each year, but 2022 marks a major shift in what it means when we talk about public safety, in-building communications, and even the core focus of the Safer Buildings Coalition. Older versions of code included the term Emergency Responder Radio Communications Systems (ERRCS). Current code now refers to Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES). A small distinction with major impact.  The change recognizes that Emergency Responders use many forms of communication today, including cellular, LMR, DMR, and SMR. And the future looks to add private networks, Bluetooth, 5G and other technologies. Since the public uses many of these technologies, there is more and more synergy between the communication needs of the public (like being able to call 9-1-1) and those of public safety.

In this context, but the present is an opportunity to provide input to help shape a very important aspect of the in-building public safety communications industry. So, what is this opportunity you ask?

For a lot of us, Thanksgiving usually means some time off from work, great food, football games, black Friday shopping, time with family and friends, etc. However, if you think back to the very first Thanksgiving it was a much different scene. It was a humble gathering that took place following the Mayflower’s arrival at Plymouth Rock in the year 1620. One fact of interest about that very first Thanksgiving are the uniqueness of those who participated. You see, the Pilgrims suffered a significant loss of colonist during their journey on the Mayflower losing 46 of their original 102 colonist. However, with the help of approximately 90 Indians they were able to work together and survive the harsh winter and through their collective efforts they yielded an abundant harvest in 1621. A classic example of people working together to solve a real problem.

Informa / IWCE among those leading the way back

John Foley, Managing Director, Safer Buildings Coalition

Posted on October 27, 2021

Informa’s decision to forge ahead with IWCE 2021 in Las Vegas, Sept 27-30, was a bold and important step in restarting the cadence of national events where the wireless industry can gather, meet, learn, and do business. When the car has been in the garage for eighteen months, the collective engine is going to sputter a little when you fire it up. The gross attendance numbers were down, but the quality was high, and good business was done. Informa delivered on their part, and we are grateful.
