Honoring Our First Responders on National First Responders Day – October 28, 2024By Alan W. Perdue, Executive Director of the Safer Buildings Coalition Today, on National First Responders Day, we pause to honor the firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics, EMTs, and 911 operators who stand ready to respond when we need them most. Since Congress designated this day in 2017, October 28 has become a moment for our nation to express profound gratitude to those who risk their lives to protect us. Their commitment to duty is unwavering, and their courage often leads them into situations that most of us can only imagine. This is a day to remember not just their bravery, but also to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their legacy is one of selflessness, and their impact reverberates through the lives they touched. Reflecting on my own four decades as a first responder, I am deeply moved by the strength and resilience shown by my fellow first responders. They willingly accept the risks, work through countless hours, and bear the emotional weight of their service. They do this because they believe in their mission and in the call to help others, even on the darkest days. To them, it’s more than a job; it’s a calling to serve and protect. In my current role with the Safer Buildings Coalition, I am privileged to continue supporting these heroes by working to ensure they have safe, effective communication tools within the buildings where they face danger. Our mission to eliminate wireless dead spots is rooted in a commitment to the safety and effectiveness of these individuals. It’s a duty we take seriously, knowing the lives of first responders depend on it. To all firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics, EMTs, and 9-1-1 operators please know that you have our deepest respect and gratitude. As First Responders, you are the cornerstone of public safety, and your service brings hope and protection to communities nationwide. Your commitment, professionalism, and sacrifice mean everything to those you serve. On behalf of myself and the entire Safer Buildings Coalition, we honor you today and every day, lifting you up in gratitude and prayer for the work you do. Thank you for being there for all of us, and may you continue to stay safe in your service.
