From the Chief’s Corner: A Deeper Dive into Secondary Power Source Batteries...

Chief Alan Perdue

Last week I had the opportunity to take a few days off before the 2023 SBC seminar circuit kicks off in Miami, FL and then takes us to 21 other cities across the US and Canada. During our time away, we did some snorkeling. To really see what’s beneath the water’s surface it’s best to dive down where you get up close and personal with some neat looking fish, colorful reefs, and other sites that truly come to life. Later as I was reflecting on that experience, I thought about a little detail related to the ERCES secondary power supplies that’s typically not discussed in too much detail... the battery itself.

For me, the Christmas season is a time of coming together with family, friends, and coworkers. Much of that time is often spent “at the table”, a place where we share food and drink and reflect on the events and activities in past year and begin discussing opportunities for the coming year. During the latter part of December, it's not uncommon for things like business travel and meetings to kind of slow down a little bit which allows us some time for reflection and preparation for the future. During this time of reflection, I found myself thinking about many of the activities we “the Coalition” were blessed to be a part of in 2022 and on the significant impact the Coalition and our members have made in the world of in-building communications.

As we approach the holiday season, a phrase often attributed to the title of a 1936 animated film “Christmas Comes but Once a Year” came to mind, along with an important annual event related to emergency responder communications enhancement systems (ERCES). The phrase was used in a poem from the 16th century English poet and farmer Thomas Tusser from Essex. The line from the poem is “At Christmas play and make good cheer, For Christmas comes but once a year”.

From the Chief’s Corner: Walking the Walk and Talking the Talk…America’s Safe Schools Week Proclamation

Chief Alan Perdue

For most of us, school safety is ever present on our minds with so many of the headlines we see through various news outlets. So, when I became aware of the fact that October 16-22 was “America’s Safe Schools Week” I began reflecting on the Phrase “Walking the Walk and Talking the Talk”. In fact, I have a book titled Walk the Talk written by best-selling authors Eric Harvey and Steve Ventura that has been part of my leadership collection for many years. Although “Walking the Walk and Talking the Talk is a common English phrase, the concept of actually doing it can be challenging. Walking the Walk and Talking the Talk requires us to live the values we have identified within our life such as the Golden Rule that many of our parents taught us growing up. Walking the Walk and Talking the Talk is more than just a catchy phrase, it is a value statement that means we should support what we say, not just with words, but also through our actions regardless of any activity we are involved in at a given moment be it faith, family, work, community involvement, sports, etc.  In all situations we have a responsibility to “Walk the Walk and Talk the Talk”.
